Overview of Paperless Trade Initiatives (ICEGATE, e-BRC, e-SANCHIT)

Paperless Trade Initiatives are digital systems introduced by governments to replace traditional paper based documentation in international trade. These initiatives enable exporters, importers, customs authorities, banks, and other stakeholders to create, submit, verify, and exchange trade documents electronically. By using online platforms, paperless trade reduces processing time, lowers transaction costs, improves transparency, and minimizes documentation errors. It also enhances customs efficiency and promotes secure information sharing. In India, initiatives such as ICEGATE, e-BRC, and e-SANCHIT play a significant role in simplifying export and import procedures, supporting Digital India, and promoting faster, efficient, and transparent international trade.

1. ICEGATE (Indian Customs Electronic Gateway)

ICEGATE (Indian Customs Electronic Gateway) is the official online portal of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) that provides electronic filing and communication services for international trade. It serves as a single digital interface connecting exporters, importers, customs brokers, shipping lines, airlines, banks, and government agencies with the Indian Customs Department. Through ICEGATE, users can electronically file Bills of Entry, Shipping Bills, Import General Manifests (IGM), Export General Manifests (EGM), and other customs documents.

The portal allows online payment of customs duties, tracking of document status, electronic acknowledgements, and exchange of trade information in real time. ICEGATE integrates with banks, ports, airports, and customs offices to ensure faster processing and customs clearance. It also supports Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), reducing paperwork and manual intervention.

By providing secure digital services, ICEGATE improves transparency, minimizes errors, reduces transaction costs, and speeds up import and export procedures. It helps businesses comply with customs regulations while ensuring efficient movement of goods across borders. ICEGATE is one of India’s most important paperless trade initiatives and plays a vital role in strengthening digital customs administration and promoting seamless international trade.

2. e-BRC (Electronic Bank Realisation Certificate)

e-BRC (Electronic Bank Realisation Certificate) is a digital certificate issued electronically by authorized banks to confirm that an exporter has received payment for exported goods or services in foreign exchange. It replaces the traditional paper based Bank Realisation Certificate and enables secure electronic transmission of export realization data to government agencies. The system is mainly used by exporters to claim export incentives and benefits under various schemes of the Government of India.

Authorized banks upload payment realization details electronically to the government portal, eliminating the need for exporters to collect and submit physical certificates. Government departments can directly verify export proceeds through the electronic system, reducing paperwork, duplication, and processing delays.

The e-BRC system improves transparency, accuracy, and efficiency in export documentation. It minimizes the risk of forged certificates, speeds up verification, and simplifies the process of claiming export benefits. Exporters save time and administrative costs while government agencies receive reliable digital records for monitoring export transactions.

As an important paperless trade initiative, e-BRC supports digital governance, strengthens export promotion measures, and enhances ease of doing business. It plays a key role in modernizing India’s export documentation system and ensuring faster processing of export incentive claims.

3. e-SANCHIT (Electronic Storage and Computerized Handling of Indirect Tax Documents)

e-SANCHIT (Electronic Storage and Computerized Handling of Indirect Tax Documents) is a digital initiative introduced by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to enable paperless submission of supporting documents required for customs clearance. Instead of submitting physical copies, importers, exporters, and customs brokers can upload invoices, packing lists, certificates, licenses, and other trade documents electronically through the customs portal.

Each uploaded document receives a unique reference number, which is linked to the Bill of Entry or Shipping Bill during customs filing. Customs officers can access the documents online for verification, reducing physical interaction and eliminating the need for paper based submissions.

e-SANCHIT improves customs efficiency by reducing processing time, minimizing documentation errors, and ensuring secure electronic storage of trade records. It also promotes transparency, faster decision making, and better coordination among customs authorities and trade participants. Businesses benefit from lower documentation costs, quicker cargo clearance, and simplified compliance procedures.

As a major paperless trade initiative, e-SANCHIT supports Digital India and the Government’s objective of creating a fully electronic customs environment. It enhances ease of doing business, strengthens trade facilitation, and contributes to faster, secure, and efficient international trade documentation in India.
