Identification of Research Gaps

Research gap is an area of knowledge, issue, relationship, population, or situation that has not been adequately investigated in existing research. It may occur because previous studies are limited, outdated, contradictory, or focused only on certain conditions. Identifying a research gap helps the researcher determine what new investigation is required. For example, if several studies examine digital banking among urban customers but very few investigate rural customers, there is a geographical and population gap. A research gap provides a foundation for developing a new research problem and helps ensure that the proposed study contributes new and useful knowledge to the existing field.

Step 1. Review of Existing Literature

The first step in identifying research gaps is conducting a comprehensive review of existing literature. Researchers examine books, journals, research papers, dissertations, reports, and other credible sources related to the research topic. The purpose is to understand what has already been studied and what findings have been established. While reviewing literature, researchers should carefully note research objectives, variables, methodology, sample characteristics, findings, conclusions, and limitations. Comparing these elements across different studies helps reveal areas that have received insufficient attention. Therefore, a systematic literature review provides the basic foundation for identifying meaningful and relevant research gaps.

Step 2. Identification of Unexplored Areas

An unexplored area refers to a subject, variable, population, location, or relationship that has received little or no research attention. Researchers can identify such areas by examining the coverage of previous studies. For example, research may have extensively examined employee motivation in large corporations but provided limited information about employees in small businesses. This creates an opportunity for further investigation. However, an unexplored topic should also be important and researchable. Researchers should evaluate whether studying the neglected area can contribute to academic knowledge or solve a practical problem. Identifying unexplored areas helps increase the originality of the proposed research.

Step 3. Identification of Contradictory Findings

Contradictory findings occur when different researchers studying similar topics reach different conclusions. Such inconsistencies represent an important type of research gap because they indicate that the existing evidence is not conclusive. For example, one study may find that financial incentives significantly improve employee productivity, while another study may find no significant relationship. The researcher can investigate why these differences exist by considering factors such as organizational culture, industry, employee characteristics, sample size, or methodology. Researching contradictory findings can clarify existing knowledge and help establish more reliable conclusions about the relationship between the variables being studied.

Step 4. Identification of Methodological Gaps

A methodological gap occurs when previous studies have limitations in their research design, sampling, data collection, measurement, or analytical methods. For example, earlier studies may have used small samples, limited geographical coverage, or only descriptive analysis. A new researcher may address these limitations by using a larger sample, improved measurement instruments, or more appropriate analytical techniques. Identifying methodological gaps allows researchers to improve upon previous research rather than simply repeating it. It can also produce more reliable and valid findings. Therefore, examining the methodology of earlier studies is an important part of identifying opportunities for new research.

Step 5. Identification of Population Gaps

A population gap occurs when research has focused primarily on one group while other relevant groups remain under-researched. For example, studies on online learning may focus mainly on university students while giving limited attention to working professionals, school students, or vocational learners. Researchers can identify such gaps by comparing the populations used across previous studies. Studying a different population may produce new findings because attitudes, experiences, resources, and behaviours can vary among groups. Population gaps are therefore useful for extending existing knowledge and determining whether conclusions obtained from one group can be applied to other relevant groups.

Step 6. Identification of Geographical Gaps

A geographical gap exists when research has been conducted extensively in certain locations but limited research is available in another relevant region. Differences in culture, economic conditions, infrastructure, education, business practices, and consumer preferences can influence research findings. For example, a study of digital payment behaviour conducted in major metropolitan areas may not fully represent consumers in rural regions. Research in a different geographical context can determine whether earlier findings remain applicable. Identifying geographical gaps is especially useful in business and social research because local conditions may significantly influence consumer behaviour, organizational practices, and economic outcomes.

Step 7. Identification of Theoretical Gaps

A theoretical gap arises when existing theories do not adequately explain a particular phenomenon or when different theories provide competing explanations. Researchers identify theoretical gaps by examining the theoretical frameworks used in previous studies. For example, existing research may explain consumer purchasing behaviour mainly through economic factors such as price and income, while giving insufficient attention to emotional and social influences. A researcher may therefore apply or develop another theoretical perspective. Theoretical gaps can contribute to the development, extension, modification, or integration of theories. They are particularly important in academic research because they can strengthen the conceptual foundation of a discipline.

Step 8. Identification of Time-Based Gaps

A time-based gap occurs when existing research is outdated and may not reflect current conditions. Changes in technology, markets, consumer behaviour, economic conditions, regulations, and social practices can make earlier findings less applicable. For example, research conducted several years ago on social media marketing may not fully explain the effects of newer platforms and digital advertising practices. Researchers can conduct updated studies to determine whether earlier conclusions remain valid. Time-based gaps are especially important in rapidly changing areas such as technology, finance, digital marketing, artificial intelligence, and consumer behaviour. Updated evidence helps organizations and policymakers make decisions based on current conditions.

Step 9. Identification of Gaps from Previous Limitations

Previous researchers often mention limitations and suggestions for future research at the end of their studies. These statements provide valuable clues for identifying research gaps. Limitations may involve small sample sizes, restricted geographical areas, limited variables, short research periods, unavailable data, or specific research methods. For example, a previous study may recommend examining the same issue across different industries because its research was conducted in only one organization. Such recommendations can be used to develop new research topics. However, researchers should critically evaluate whether the suggested gap is significant and feasible before adopting it as a research problem.

Step 10. Formulation of Research Problem from the Gap

After identifying a research gap, the researcher should convert it into a clear and specific research problem. The gap should explain what is missing from existing knowledge and what the proposed study intends to investigate. For example, if previous research has focused mainly on urban consumers’ adoption of digital payments, the researcher may formulate a problem concerning factors influencing digital payment adoption among rural consumers. The research problem should be connected with appropriate objectives and questions. A clear connection between the gap and research problem ensures that the proposed study directly addresses an identified deficiency in existing literature.
